Get out and go…

to the West Coast then the East Coast with a lot in between.

Watching the world go by from the passenger seat of our car is a pretty amazing place to be.  The past month we have seen so much of this great country during two road trips that took us in opposite directions. We covered somewhere around 6000 miles, 15 states, 3 hotel stays, 3 campsites, 7 nights at a beach house, 1 night in our car and maybe 15 miles of hiking. We have been on the move!

Our first road trip was to Southern California for work, play and visiting family. Our second trip was to North Carolina for a week at the beach with friends.

While driving home from the beach, Emerson said he was tired of riding in the car. I got it, I was too. I knew that by that time we got home we would have spent somewhere around 100 hours in the car collectively. So, I got it. I also knew that if I agreed and complained with him that the last 4 hrs of our trip would be miserable. I said, “You know what? It’s pretty cool to see how the landscape changes outside your window. The world is passing in front of your eyes and it’s pretty amazing. You are lucky to get to see it all.” We then talked about flying and how it takes time too and when you drive you get to stop and see things along the way. About an hour later Emerson said, “Mom, I like watching the world go by.”

Road trips are a fun, exciting adventures that really take time, patience and a good sense of humor.

I took all these photos sitting in the passenger seat on our California or Bust road trip and Beach House road trip. Don’t forget to enjoy the journey, watch the landscape change and the world go by.

How do you pass the time when riding in the passenger seat?
